Skin loses elasticity with age, leading to problems with drooping or sagging. When this happens with our necks, we can be left with the appearance of a turkey neck, or excess skin hanging below our chins. The neck lift is a procedure that Dr. Aylward and the Truman team commonly perform in combination with a facelift. The goal of this facial plastic surgery procedure is to improve common signs of aging near the neck and jawline.
Deciding to Undergo a Neck Lift
The neck lift in Kansas City is most often used for the correction of problems such as neck folds and excess skin (known to many as a turkey neck), which hits many people in their forties. Men and women experiencing issues such as jowls or a double chin may benefit from a neck lift. If excess fat below the chin is what is causing your problem, we can combine your neck lift with liposuction to achieve a slim and youthful definition of the neck.
Most patients undergo the neck lift as part of a combination facial surgery, including other popular procedures such as a facelift, brow lift or eyelid surgery. Depending on your consultation, Dr. Aylward will recommend the best treatment plan to help achieve your desired results.
Your Neck Lift Surgery
Our surgical team performs each neck lift based on the specific needs of each individual patient. Some only require excess skin to be reduced, others may need a section of the underlying muscle to be tightened or removed, and others may also require facial liposuction as part of their neck lift.
An incision will be made below or behind each of your ears. In some cases, we may also need to make a small incision beneath your chin. Once the skin has been loosened, Dr. Aylward can alter the underlying muscle and tissue as necessary to provide a firm contour. The skin is then redraped over your neck and any excess skin is removed before the surgical team closes your incisions.
Neck Lift Recovery
Tightness and soreness of the neck are common following a neck lift, but these issues can be managed using painkillers recommended to you by Dr. Aylward. Don’t try to do too much too soon. Keep your head elevated and avoid quick or sudden movements. Try to get up and walking around a couple times each day to help with circulation, but be sure to take it easy and get plenty of rest.
As you continue to heal from surgery, bruising and swelling will fade, and your neck will appear firmer and younger than before. Results from a neck lift in Kansas City last much longer than other non-surgical skin tightening treatments so you can maintain a more youthful appearance for years to come.
