One of the first procedures that comes to mind as a person comes face to face with the signs of aging is the facelift. As one of the better known plastic surgery procedures, the facelift has been around for decades and continues to be one of the best treatments for turning back the clock and achieving that youthful look everyone desires. The Truman team knows the facelift is not just about looking younger, but also about maintaining one’s unique look so they don’t come out of surgery looking completely different. As a Kansas City board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Carol Aylward’s years of training allow her to provide her patients with beautiful, natural-looking facelift results.
Deciding to Undergo a Facelift
The Facelift in Kansas City is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures for both men and women. In 2013, more than 133,000 men and women had a facelift. Even with the availability of non-surgical treatments such as Botox or injectable fillers, the facelift continues to be a popular choice for battling the signs of aging and providing longer lasting results.
This procedure is most common with men and women over the age of 40 who are no longer seeing the results they want with non-surgical alternatives. The facelift is effective in treating common issues in the mid to lower face, such as:
- Sagging skin
- Marionette lines
- Facial folds
We may recommend combining your Facelift in Kansas City with a neck lift or other procedures—like a brow lift or eyelid surgery—to address signs of aging in other areas of the face as well.
Your Facelift Surgery
The surgical team will begin your facelift by making two incisions beginning near both temples, extending around the front of your ear, and finishing near the base of your scalp. The skin is carefully separated from the underlying fat and muscle as Dr. Aylward reshapes the underlying structure to achieve a youthful contour. Liposuction can be used to remove excess fat, especially along the chin or neck.
Once the desired shape is achieved, we will pull the skin back over for a taut appearance, trimming away any excess before closing the incisions.
Fat Grafting with Your Facelift in Kansas City
Dr. Aylward and the Truman team also perform fat grafting with most facelift procedures. This helps to restore a more youthful appearance of the face in a way that the pulling and tightening of a facelift can’t achieve alone. Evidence shows that stem cells in the transplanted fat provide positive effects beyond volume restoration. Our patients have seen fantastic results with this combination of fat grafting and a facelift.
It will take some time before you are able to see your full results. Initially after your procedure, you will need to keep your incisions covered with gauze and bandages. Once they are removed, you will notice an improvement in the tightness of your skin and shape of your face, but there will be some bruising and swelling, which will continue to fade over the course of about 2-3 weeks.
After about 10-14 days you should be able to return to work. Makeup can be used to conceal any visible bruising as your face heals. It is important to avoid excessive sun exposure for the first few months after your facelift.
Seeing your face in the mirror for the first time can be a very emotionally rewarding experience. Our goal is not to have patients feel like they see someone different in the mirror, but rather as though they are looking at a version of themselves from the past. The results of a facelift procedure can last for up to 10 years and many patients choose to come back for a secondary surgery with the Truman team.
